广义上的海豚，一般指的是海豚科。在一些文章里，如果结合上下文，“海豚”甚至会用来指代海豚超科。狭义的海豚，则仅指真海豚属。而一般理解里的海豚，或者普通印象里的海豚，又或网上图片搜索海豚二字出来的结果，则相当大部分都是瓶鼻海豚。瓶鼻海豚和真海豚，两者从外观到颜色，都是明显不同的。只不过瓶鼻海豚是水族馆表演里最常见的，于是便取代了真海豚而拥有了海豚之名。
